Vascular Lesions of the Head and Neck

Guilherme Dabus

“Vascular Lesions of the Head and Neck” is the latest Special Collection from the American Journal of Neuroradiology. Collection Editor Guilherme Dabus from the Miami Vascular Institute organized 39 articles into 4 sections to provide a panoramic view of these lesions from the diagnostic and therapeutic perspectives. The major sections are: Vascular Anomalies, including hemangioma and high- and low-flow vascular malformations; Tumors, including highly vascularized tumors in the head and neck area, predominantly paragangliomas and juvenile nasoangiofibromas; Carotid Blowout Syndrome, a complication associated with radiation therapy that results in life-threatening hemorrhage; and Miscellaneous articles important to practitioners, including functional angiographic anatomy in the head and neck and epistaxis.

“Diagnosing and treating these lesions is a complex task that requires the active participation of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiologists, usually inserted within a multidisciplinary team. It is because of the importance and active role of our specialty in the successful management of these patients that we decided to compile this Special Collection,” said Dabus. “The articles selected show different management strategies, demonstrate the association with intracranial abnormalities, and discuss embryology, anatomy, and imaging characterization.”

In an accompanying podcast, Dr. Dabus talks with AJNR’s Podcast Editor C. Douglas Phillips about selecting manuscripts to assist in the difficult decision-making process of diagnosing and managing these lesions. This special podcast is available to download on the AJNR Web site and in the iTunes Store.

AJNR’s Special Collections are intended to provide a comprehensive source of imaging-related articles on a single topic and are released biannually on an open-access basis. Previous Collections include “Imaging Acute Stroke and its Consequences,” “Acute Stroke Intervention,” “Percutaneous Vertebroplasty,” “Radiation Dose in Neuroradiology CT Protocols,” “Brain Tumor Imaging, Volume 1: Pretherapy,” “Brain Tumor

Imaging, Volume 2: Posttherapy,” “Head and Neck Neoplasms,” and “Congenital Brain Anomalies.” All are available through AJNR’s print-on-demand service, where readers can order a full-color hard copy for just US $50, plus shipping.
